Scented candles say as much about your home as the perfume you wear says about you. Here we offer five tips for scented candles that elevate the atmosphere of your home.
The scented candle is a fairly simple (and relatively affordable) way to make your home both cosier and more fragrant. Just as you wear a fragrance to accentuate your style and personality, a scented candle will set the tone and define the atmosphere of your home as soon as your guest steps through the door. The aroma of a good scented candle will linger in the air long after the candle has been extinguished. Learn how to properly use and burn your scented candles. You should never light a scented candle for just a short period of time and then extinguish it. Repeatedly doing this will cause the wick to burn down and result in a small, deep hole in the middle of the candle. Light the candle and let it burn long enough so that the entire surface of the candle is heated and all the wax melts, but no longer than about 4 hours. When the wick is too long, use scissors to trim it down to five millimetres. This prevents the flame from becoming too large.
Byredo - Bohemia
Since its inception, the Swedish company Byredo has set a lofty standard for scented candles of the absolute highest quality. Poured into a chunky container made of black mouth-blown glass, this candle with the scent “Bohemia” will fill your home with fragrance for about 60 hours of burning time. Notes of opopanax and rum run through heart notes of rosemary and labandum, set against a dark, sophisticated base of vanilla, sandalwood and oak moss.
D.S. & Durga - Big Sur After Rain
From its headquarters and production premises in New York City, DS & Durga sends you on fragrance-guided trips to the world’s most spectacular destinations. Big Sur After Rain takes you to the mythical Big Sur along the California coast. Notes of eucalyptus, magnolia, sandalwood and oak moss transport you to a misty green slope overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just after a trip over the Bixby Bridge.
Eight & Bob - Lord Howe
The French fragrance house Eight & Bob took its name from an order made by John F. Kennedy, which read “…Eights samples, and if your production allows, another one for Bob”. With candles made from 100% vegetable wax, the scents are inspired by world geography. The Lord Howe Scented Candle draws inspiration from the Tasman Sea and is imbued with the aromas of pepper, grapefruit, jasmine, patchouli, musk and sandalwood. For perfume aficionados, these notes bespeak the level of quality and fragrance know-how of the brand.
19-69 - Chinese Tobacco Scented Candle
The Swedish fragrance house 19-69 delivers an aesthetic that adds a colourful accent in a beautiful, minimalist spirit. The fragrance “Chinese Tobacco” is heavily inspired by Asian contrasts and such classic films as Apocalypse Now and Indochine. Perhaps one of the most inspiring fragrance palettes of its kind, it plays with top notes of Italian bergamot, red pepper and lemon. Ginger and coriander become colourful heart notes, and the whole combination is anchored by heavy base notes of incense, cedar, vanilla, tar, oud and vetiver.
